Gorilla escapade

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - A 390-pound gorilla grabbed some low-hanging bamboo to scale a wall at a South Carolina zoo Friday, escaping his enclosure and tackling a worker before returning to his pen about five minutes later. The gorilla at Riverbanks Zoo ran into a pizza-stand employee who curled up and played dead to try to avoid further injuries... The culprit is believed to be a 16-year-old western lowland gorilla named Mike, though zoo officials didn't know for certain. Three gorillas are in the exhibit.

Meteorite survivor

ESSEN, Germany (UPI) - A German boy on his way to school has become the second known person to survive a direct strike by a meteorite... Gerrit Blank, 14, has a 3-inch scar where he was hit on the hand by a pea-sized rock that hurtled to earth at more than 30,000 miles an hour... "At first I saw a large ball of light, and then I suddenly felt a pain in my hand,"...

Kidney matchmaking

(UPI) - Anthony Cottman of New York said Pittsburgh resident Nancy Murrell is a "special person" for agreeing to donate her kidney
to a stranger in desperate need for one...
She learned of him through the Web site, KidneyDonor-KidneyMatchmaker.com...
The two will meet face-to-face for the first time just before their June 25 operation.

Witch bottle

LONDON (UPI) - Builders discovered an intact 17th century "witch bottle," a wine jug containing hair, finger nail clippings, pins and urine... the bottle, believed to be the first found with its contents intact, was discovered at a construction site in the Greenwich district of London... The burial of witch bottles containing personal items was a common practice among people suffering from illnesses and believing themselves to be the target of witchcraft during the 17th century.

Love and lottery

VILLA ROCA, GA (UPI) - Karen Hill was pleased when her husband Chuck came home with a winning $5,000 Weekly WinFall lottery ticket... However, she said the state of shock increased by a factor of 200 the next week when she bought a winning Georgia Lottery ticket that paid out $1 million... they plan to use their newfound riches to pay off their bills.

FLOWER MOUND, TX (UPI) - A 10-year-old girl was arrested and charged for fighting in a park with her 13-year-old sister... The older sister said the fight broke out after her younger sister refused to follow her instructions... "'This is criminal, and one of them is going to have to go to jail and it's probably going to have to be your younger one because she was the aggressor,'" their mother quoted the police officer as saying. "And I said, 'Are you kidding me?' and he said, 'No, no.'"

Creative ways to a job

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Job-seekers are using unusual gimmicks to grab the attention of potential employers, such as in one case sending a shoe along with a resume to get a "foot in the door," ... Almost a fifth of hiring managers report seeing more unconventional tactics this year, compared with 12 percent who said so last year, according to the study by CareerBuilder.com, an online jobs site.

(WebMD) - Gazing at the computer screen may hurt your eyes, but it's what people don't see when they're near the machines that cause
the most injuries... There's been more than a sevenfold increase in injuries from actions such
as tripping over computer equipment...

(AP) - Facebook is further embracing the real name culture it touts as one of its founding principles — and catching up with rival MySpace in the process. Starting on Saturday, the popular online hangout's millions of users will be able to claim a name to use as part of their profile page's Web address — as in http://facebook.com/janedoe. Currently Facebook assigns each profile a string of numerals over which users have
no control.

(Fox News) - It outsold every other car in the U.S. in 2008. The Cozy Coupe, a plastic cherry-red sports car, allows toddlers to sit on a bench-style seat and poke their legs through to the ground. When they start walking, the car begins to go. The Little Tikes toy car sold 457,000 units in 2008, topping the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord... It would land in the top-20 best-selling models of all time, if considered, having sold more than 10 million units in its 30-year history.

Zero gravity wedding

(UPI) - A New York couple are in the final stages of planning their wedding -- an event that will make them the first to tie the knot in zero gravity. Noah Fulmore, 31, and Erin Finnegan, 30, who met at a New York University science fiction club meeting in 2000, said their wedding later this month will take place on a Zero Gravity Corporation flight at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida...The pair are paying the entire $5,200 per person bill for themselves and a handful of guests.

Musical wet diaper

(UPI) - A daytime diaper that uses a musical "wetting alarm" for children in day-care centers is effective fortoilet training, Belgian researchers found... children in the wetting alarm diaper training group achieved independent bladder control 51.9 percent of the time and did significantly better than the control group's 8.3 percent.

Can't afford to divorce

LONDON (Reuters) - Fewer British couples are filing for divorce as a sharp drop in property prices makes it hard for couples to sell a joint home, and the credit crunch dampens a desire to fund two separate households... "Reasons vary but certainly
the financial carve-up that follows a divorce settlement will be at the forefront of
a couple's minds when contemplating divorce,"...

Coffee filter dress

ST. CHARLES, MO (UPI) - A Missouri high school senior who wore a dress made from coffee filters to her school prom said it took her about a month to create the dress from scratch.  Aimee Kick of Francis Howell North High School wanted a one-of-a-kind dress for her senior prom... she would sometimes spend up to six hours a day sewing, staining, dying, folding and cutting the coffee filters for her dress.

WELLINGTON (AP) - A New Zealand mom made some online bids on toys before napping. Then her 3-year-old daughter took over and bought a bigger plaything

20,000 New Zealand dollar ($12,300) bid on the Kobelco digger with a few mouse clicks at the auction site TradeMe... Mother Sarah Quinlan immediately called the auction site... the digger was relisted.

Across the water for a cat

HARRISON, MI (UPI) - A London couple said they became so enamored with a cat they saw online that they traveled 3,900 miles to Michigan to adopt him.  Rose and Chris Rasmussen said they were searching for black and white cats online about seven months ago when they came across the adoption ad for Sparky, a cat at the Clare County Animal Shelter.

American soldiers in combat to fall in love — through online dating services.... Dating services such as Match.com and eHarmony are reporting that numerous servicemembers are finding romance with someone in the United States while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Ear blasting

TOKYO (Reuters) - A Japanese park has started playing a high-pitched tone at night that only young people can hear to help drive away teenagers who keep vandalizing... "The Mosquito" is a device that emits a high-frequency tone that is unbearable to those who can hear it... People's ability to hear high frequencies falls as they age.
The device produces a high-pitch tone of around 17 kilohertz, which teens can hear but older people cannot.

Run in your underwear

ORANGE, CA (UPI) - Organizers of the "Undie Run" at California's Chapman University said about 1,000 students donated their clothes to charity and jogged in their skivvies... clothing shed by students before running in their bras, panties, boxers, briefs and thongs was collected in garbage bags and will be donated to a Ugandan orphanage... The night culminated in a dance at the school's gym.
